Frank Sargeson (1903–1982) was one of Aotearoa’s greatest twentieth-century writers, producing short stories, novels and nonfiction in a celebrated, homegrown vernacular. He also acted as the generous centre of a literary circle and had an out-sized influence on the development of a quintessentially New Zealand literature and its practitioners, such as Janet Frame, C.K. Stead, Maurice Duggan, Kevin Ireland, Maurice Gee and Owen Marshall. The Frank Sargeson Trust is entrusted with caring for his legacy and is responsible for maintaining the Frank Sargeson House on Esmonde Road in Takapuna, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and administering the writer’s fellowship that bears his name.
